Are You Teaching Your Child/Children Well?

toughloveThis post may come across as a bit of tough love. But please here me when I say, I share because I care!

As I was planning this post, a song came to mind that has been on repeat in my head. Maybe you’ll recognize it. Maybe even sing it in your head, or feel free to just belt it out! 🙂

“I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside. Give them a sense of pride to make it easier. Let the children’s laughter, remind us how we used to be.”

You know that one, right?! Whitney Houston.

Could your lack of GOOD sleep be the cause of your health problems?

Hi y’all! I hope this post finds you feeling rested and ready to tackle the week. I’m guessing, though, that there’s a chance you’re feeling like you just want to crawl back into bed and wake up on Friday. Haha!

Now, you’ve heard my thoughts on exercise, eating right, taking care of yourself emotionally, mentally and spiritually, but the one thing we haven’t really talked about yet is one thing we all really love: SLEEP. Continue reading “Could your lack of GOOD sleep be the cause of your health problems?”

True Rewards vs. Self-Sabotage

Oh these dreary grey days. They’re one of the easiest days to wake up and suddenly feel as though all the motivation and energy you normally wake up with is just –POOF!– soaked up by your nice, cozy mattress.

I know they say that sunshine helps your mood, so it does make sense that on a day with a clear blue sky, you might wake up feeling a teensy bit perkier. Either way, though, coping with that oh so alluring temptation to just reset your alarm for an hour later and go back to bed is a fight I think we all wage from time to time.

Action vs. Regret

It’s taken me a long time to get to the point where this was a strong enough pull for me, but on Monday, when I was sooooooo tempted to just go back to sleep, my goals just kept going through my mind.

Good ActionsAnd I knew if I gave into my body wanting more sleep and went back to bed, I not only wouldn’t feel any better later in the day, I’d also have to live with the REGRET of not taking action.

And let’s face it: Regret sucks.

So I had a choice to make: Go back to bed or just suck it up and get moving. I chose to take ACTION! And it felt AMAZING and completely changed how I was feeling!

And because I took action, it led to others taking action as well. And there just isn’t a word that encapsulates how awesome that feels!!

Take That, Resistance!

I think that in all of our lives, we struggle with resistance and procrastination in all shapes and sizes. It could be as subtle as smacking the snooze button for the third time instead of sticking to your workout schedule. Or, it could be as loud as your family resisting the healthy changes you’re trying to enact for yourself (and for all of them in turn).

No ExcusesWhat’s tricky about this type of resistance is that we’re just so darn used to it, you know? It’s that teeny tiny little voice in our heads that goes, “Ah well. It was a really long day. It’s totally fine to have another glass of wine.” Or, “Meh. Eat the rest of the fries. You worked out, like, 4 times this week!”

To be brutally honest, it somehow convinces you that what you’re doing isn’t self-sabotage at all; it’s just warm-fuzzy rewards for deserving awesomeness! #mmmhmm

And who doesn’t want rewards and coddling? I mean, really. It just feels so GOOD! And that’s why we fall for it over and over again. However, you can break that cycle if you can teach yourself how to see through those “rewards” for what they really are. How?

Measure that Reward

The next time you feel that urge to “reward” yourself, try to build in a little space between the impulse and the action. You may think I’m crazy, but MAKE yourself count to 10 or 100 and see if you still NEED that “reward.”

Thought About SkippingOr, if you think you’re still hungry but you just wolfed down your meal, drink a full glass of water, wait 15 minutes and see if you’re really hungry. Also, the next time you get the impulse to reach for a snack when you logically shouldn’t need one, check in with yourself to see if you’re actually hungry or if you’re technically just BORED or emotionally zapped.

If you’ve already had your allotment of the tasty treat, ask yourself calmly and gently if a second helping is going to help you achieve the goals you’ve been working so hard toward. “Is that second scoop of frozen yogurt going to help me fit in my skinny jeans?” Or, “Will that second bag of popcorn help me keep my cholesterol low?” Most likely the answer will be NO.

I’m not saying DON’T reward yourself. I’m just suggesting that you do it within reason. Have treats — we all need them from time to time! But by weighing what you’re “treating” yourself with against what you’re trying to achieve, you’ll probably find that you have more inner strength to make the best choice for yourself. A la, “Actually, you’re right. I don’t need a ANOTHER cookie.”

Your Turn!

You know I love hearing from y’all! What are some of the ways you work to overcome your own self-sabotaging tendencies? Have you found a reward system that works for you?

Savory, Fast AND Healthy Stuffed Squash Recipe

Hi y’all! It’s been a while since I shared a tasty recipe, so I thought I would post a super tasty and surprisingly easy stuffed squash meal today. It’s super tasty, very healthy and surprisingly satisfying for lunch or dinner.

What I like about this recipe is that you get both your protein AND your veggie fix, and the total prep and cook time should really only take you 30-40 minutes. (YAY!)

I actually found this recipe through Autumn Calabrese, the creator of the 21-Day Fix. She did a video tutorial with Jessie Jane (who runs the Lilyshop Blog), and since my mouth was watering after watching it, I gave it a shot with a little tweak to make it my own! Long Term Weight Loss Goals vs. Crash diets

One of my good girlfriends — like many of us — oscillates between being super on top of her game (a la P90X and Insanity) and being 20 pounds overweight. It’s painful to watch her cycle through her moments of feeling like a failure when they inevitably come. Over the years, I’ve tried to reassure her along the way and remind her that she can get back on top of it, just as she’s done many times before.

She’s currently coming out of one of her low times after having packed on some pounds in a stressful period of her life. What’s amazing, though, is that something seems to have clicked for her this time because instead of trying to get back into tip top shape in one month’s time, she has decided to commit to upping her fitness level over a full year.

I practically whooped with joy when she calmly told me that she decided to make that change (instead of crash dieting and punishing her body with grueling workouts over a short period of time). When we talked about what inspired the change in her approach, she admitted that a huge part of it was from seeing me and a number of our friends slowly but surely change our lives and fitness levels over many, many months and years. 3 Reasons Not To Skip Breakfast

We’ve all had those mornings: You wake up late and fly out the front door while zipping your pants and then it’s 2 o’clock and you wonder why you have a pounding headache and a distinct urge to slam the door on the day and go back to bed.

On those kinds of days, it’s no wonder we forget to eat. Even on the days that have a calmer start, though, I know many of us tend to skip breakfast since our hunger hasn’t caught up with us yet, or simply because we don’t know what to eat.

This meal is SO easy to skip, but it’s also the worst possible meal for you to skip in the first place. Seriously. Study after study has shown this. So, here are 3 reasons NOT to skip breakfast, and my super duper no excuses simple deluxe solutions! Continue reading “3 Reasons Not To Skip Breakfast”

PiYo: How to Get Strong, Lean and Flexible – A Customer Review

I know most of y’all have heard me talk about why I love PiYo. I mean, let’s face it: I’m not shy about telling people why I love something. Now, it’s not surprising that once most people try Beachbody, they’re usually hooked on it. As such, it’s kind of hard to get an impartial review, particularly when talking to any of my Beachbody friends and coaches, who are flat out enthusiasts. However, I got creative, and I’m happy to report that one of my girlfriends — who has never tried a Beachbody workout program before — just recently bought PiYo, and when I asked her if she’d write a review so I could share it with y’all, she said yes! (I also asked her to send me a pic to include with the post, and she didn’t disappoint with her post-workout pose. Haha!) So, without further ado, here’s Faith’s review of PiYo: Continue reading “PiYo: How to Get Strong, Lean and Flexible — A Customer Review”

How To Lose Weight and Improve Your Health

Most of y’all have probably heard me rave about Shakeology at one point or another. I mean, who doesn’t love a superfood shake that’s actually delicious?

Up until this point, I only had my own experiences with it and those of my friends and fellow coaches to back up how much I love this stuff. However, today’s the day, folks, where I have even more to go off of!

How I Found Shakeology

ShakeologyFirst and foremost, if you’ve never heard of it before, Shakeology is a meal-replacement shake by Beachbody that’s choc full of vitamins, minerals and superfoods. Unlike a number of other meal or protein shakes out there, it not only TASTES awesome, but it makes you feel great because it’s packed full of so many wonderful things!

Prior to adding Shakeology to my daily routine, I had the WORST junk food cravings and a positively monster sweet tooth! For me, eating healthy (and making healthy choices) ALWAYS seemed like a battle. Finally though, after a year of disbelief and full on doubt that this shake was everything it was claimed to be, I decided to take the plunge and give it a try.

I knew that I felt GOOD while I was drinking it but it wasn’t until I RAN OUT that I realized just how much it had been helping me control my junk food cravings and sweet tooth. I literally STALKED my UPS driver until he brought that package to my door and I gave him a HUGE hug. #crazybutdontcare

The Awesome Stuff

I must have read and re-read the nutrition facts a million times to wrap my mind around all the good stuff that’s packed into these shakes. I mean, there’s everything from pre- and probiotics to phytonutrients, to protein and amino acids! No wonder it makes you feel fantastic when you compare it to, say, your favorite candy bar. Haha!

What’s more, my father-in-law, who had been taking cholesterol meds for YEARS and was barely under control started drinking Shakeology every day and completely QUIT his meds (with his doctor’s approval). When he went in for his 90 day bloodwork, his cholesterol was lower than it had been even WITH MEDS!!

And NOW beyond the personal testimonies, it has been CLINICALLY proven to do what Beachbody coaches have claimed it could do for YEARS!!

The Awesomeness Has Been Backed Up!

Shakeology YumminessAn independent 90-day clinical study was done with 50 individuals to test how effective Shakeology is. All the participants drank Shakeology for breakfast and lunch for 90 days, carefully recorded their adherence to the program, checked in every 30 days, and made NO OTHER CHANGES in their diets and their exercise regimens.

After 90 days, the results were pretty darn staggering, IMHO: Overall, the 50 people in the trial lost anywhere from 9-24 pounds;  they saw their total cholesterol go down by 7-50%; they had fewer cravings for junk food and generally wanted smaller portions; AND, their blood sugar levels went down by 5-19%!
